Grilled cheese, the ultimate comfort food? The after-school classic is making a ferocious comeback on foodie's plates, and is now widely available in brunch, gastropub and high-end versions. But for the best of the best, the one address to try is Edwina’s Grilled Cheese.
The small Notre-Dame-de-Grâce dinette is the brainchild of Edwina Reich, a former university mathematics and computer science instructor. “I have always had this slightly out-there fantasy of having my own restaurant; hospitality was the main motivation to make the switch. I am a very sociable person who loves to host, entertain and chat. Having a resto was my calling.”
The entrepreneur spent much of her career running a computer sales and service business before teaching math. “But at 55, I told myself, ‘It’s now or never,’ and I decided to go for the whole tamale. At first, I was thinking of opening a small dairy bar, but with our winters it seemed like a fool’s errand. Grilled cheese came flying in like the gospel: It’s the perfect comfort food, it’s delicious and available in every possible combination,” explains the woman who is responsible for giving Montreal Edwina’s Grilled Cheese in June, 2014.
