Cinko is a bright and funky space in the heart of Quartier Latin, Walking distance from CEGEP du Vieux-Montreal and UQAM. Their unique décor is matched by their surprisingly delicious food. Ranging from fried cauliflower salad to fish and chip tacos, to burgers with fries and the macaroni and cheese with hot pepper chicken and honey apple sauce. They also serve a selection of cocktails, wine, beer, liquor and hard coffee.
“We wanted to bring a new concept to the city where people could go out and have a meal without ruining themselves,” explains Steve Jodoin, one of five co-owners. “We heard about the concept out west in Vancouver: they were serving good food for under five dollars, so we thought it would be a good concept to bring to Montreal. We’ve been in the bar industry for the past 20 years but we wanted to change our target audience and try something different.”
There are always challenges when starting a new business, but Cinko had a set of their own, perhaps more than other restaurants. “Food cost, for one, is a challenge,” explains Steve. “To be able to offer great food at a great price we needed a good creative chef and we were lucky enough to have one in our circle of friends.”
A quint-dollarama of sorts, everything edible at Quartier Latin’s quirky Cinko sells for a flat fiver. This contemporary casse-croûte suggests a seasonal, international comfort fare with the likes of chili bowls, cobb salads, Portuguese chicken, tacos, burgers and hot dogs. UQAM students; rejoice!
Every time you pass Cinko, you’ll see the famous queue! So what’s going on in this restaurant? It’s simple: the entire menu is offered at a special price of $5! And no, we’re not talking about cheap food or a tapas format. Here, with two plates (3 for big appetites), you’re good for the evening. In short, it’s cheaper (and much, much better) than a McDonald’s! There’s also the cool Warhol-inspired decor and its atmosphere, which is fresh and dynamic. In short, we like! But be patient, because they don’t take reservations.
