Andrzej Misiak wanted to combine his passion for surfing with his career as a personal trainer. He saw that beginners were struggling physically with the demands of the sport and decided to put together a program that would help people train their bodies before riding the waves. So helped found a studio, SURFSET Toronto on Yonge St., bringing his two passions together.
SURFSET Toronto opened in 2014 with another owner, but Andrzej took over in 2016. Workouts here are done entirely while balancing on a surfboard. The top of the board is similar to a short board, roughly six feet long, mounted on a base that includes resistance straps on the side to control the board's stability. As you improve, the boards become less stable, and prospective surfers start to get better at balancing on it.
The surf is always up in any weather at this midtown fitness centre. Your fat-burning, muscle-toning, non-stop workout takes place on a surfboard, specially designed on a flexible base to replicate the challenge of riding an ocean wave. Imagine you’re on a giant swell while engaging every muscle and torching flab, surfer-style.
As Torontonians, we don’t get much access to killer waves, so urban-dwelling surfers keep skills sharp and bodies ripped at this indoor surfing studio in North Toronto. The patented Surfset board is the world’s first total-body surf trainer, a surfboard affixed to a hydraulics system that simulates the balance-invoking feeling of the open water. Take your quintessential plank exercises and put them on the wibbly-wobbly board and you’ll find you working all kinds of muscles you never knew existed.
