Great coffee > EXTRA BUTTER!
“Nobody really knows the real story behind the name,” says Extra Butter Coffee co-owner Ian McPhedran. He and Cassie German (pictured below) named their Roncesvalles café after the popular dark roast blend from Dark City Coffee. “The story I’ve heard is that it’s called Extra Butter because the oily beans glisten like butter on popcorn,” he explains.
The popcorn reference is fitting for these two film buffs who first met while working together at a nearby coffee shop. Ian took a part-time job as a barista at Cherry Bomb while working on his PhD. Cassie was the manager at the time and the two became fast friends. After two years of slinging Americanos side-by-side, they decided it was time to start out on their own.
“It was important for us to stay in Roncesvalles,” says Ian, as both he and Cassie live in the area and are passionate about the community. The business partners pooled their talents and resources and opened Extra Butter Coffee in the spring of 2014.

Great coffee > EXTRA BUTTER!
Think your friends might be familiar with this business? Ask your friends on Facebook to see what they think.
You can pick and choose from a selection of several Dark City roasts for home grinding, including the namesake Extra Butter variety. Dark City has been on the Toronto coffee scene since 1987 and to preserve freshness, prides itself on preparing beans to order on an antique roaster. If you’re having a weekend morning coffee fest, allow yourself to be tempted by the breakfast offerings at Extra Butter, including delectable doughnuts and maple mustard bacon buns.
View this Smart ListNo, this café doesn’t use extra butter in their coffee or foods. The name is actually from the blend of coffee they use by local roasters Dark City. It smells like sweet butter and tastes like bittersweet chocolate. Extra Butter’s espresso-based bevvies pair perfectly with a cinnamon sugar doughnut (a customer fave). But, you can also go for something guilt-free like granola protein bars or low-glycemic chocolate fudge bites by local raw, vegan, organic and gluten-free artisan Au Naturel. On a nice day, you can watch the Ronceys passerby on the bench outside.
