We ordered a meal for two for delivery. The price was good, delivery was quick. We ate a quarter of our meal which consisted of rice, chicken balls, wonton soup, spare ribs and spring rolls. We then found a medium-sized fried insect stuck on one of the spring rolls. It looks like an earwig only wider. We then phoned the restaurant and explained what happened. They gave us a full refund. They were helpful. We won't be ordering again from this restaurant, nor should you.
Food is good, though not spectacular. Nothing bad. Middle-of-the-road Chinese-Canadian food, nothing too excotic. Good service. Come here to still your hunger without regret, but not for a romantic date. Busy at lunch time. The place has been in business for decades - certainly know what they are doing.
While the food at Cathay is above average, the service is terrible, and the decor is...well...strange. The lady who greeted and seated us made no efforts to pull up a chair or help, in spite of the fact that I was on crutches and my grandmother is 78. Just a plain old 'Sit here' kind of service. We ordered our food and waited for almost 15 minutes before the starters and soup appeared. Once that was done, we waited for nearly 45 minutes for the main course. We asked the waitress about the order 4 times, and her reply was that they were 'busy' which was hard to fathom considering there were only two other tables with diners. Once the food arrived, it was just above average, and what irrirtated me the most was that I had to ask for hot sauce 4 times before she reluctantly brought us some, that too with a disposition as though she was doing us a big favour. There was a group of 6 Chinese people at the next table, and although they arrived after us, they got their food before us, which probably means that they were given preference over us in the kitchen, which led to the delay. The waitress was very friendly with these Chinese tourists to the extent she spent a long time chatting with them, and deliberagtely iugnored us when we tried to flag ehr attention to serve us. Her indifference continued until - of course - time came to pay the bill, when she let out a flury of 'sorry's' presumably to coax us into parting with a tip - which we did not of course. Also note: this is probably the first Chinese restaurant I have been to where they charge for Chinese tea and FORTUNE COOKIES!!! All in all, just not worth it, and will NEVER go there again!
Excellent buffet. Hot and replenished often. In the main lounge downstairs, the food is quite good as well. Recommend sizzling seafood dish.
Best Canadian-Chinese in the city from one of the oldest Canadian-Chinese families. Don't expect exotic dim sums here. The lunchtime buffet is mediocre. The decor is cavernous and 60s. But a la carte is surprisingly good. I recommend the Kung Pao tofu and the Buddha's Delight.
My reviews pertain to the west end location, on a delivery order. Firstly, my standards for delivery of chinese food are not unreasonable. I do not expect the quality or flavour that I get at better establishments on Somerset. Nonetheless, after placing a typical order for delivery (Mu Shu, Hot & Sour Soup, General Tao's Chicken, etc), I found the following - Soup was inedible; corn starch and pepper. - Mu Shu was primarily cabbage on flaky, thick pancakes - Chinese greens consisted of Bok Choy. Period. - Shrimp & Lobster sauce was tasteless and watery. When I called to express my concerns, I found that the manager was unavailable. My recommendation: Do not consider the west-end location, at least for delivery.
