A display case filled with exquisite patisserie, savouries and Viennoiserie lures many people to press their faces against The Sweet Spot Bakery’s window for a peek – although the greater temptation is to walk through the door and place an order.
A visit to The Sweet Spot, located in Steveston village, saves the cost of airfare to Paris. In fact, the petite bakery has been described as “the best outside of France.” Customers are so smitten with The Sweet Spot that they will travel from far afield to visit and bring home their favourite treats.
Owners Kirsten Degenhardt and Keiran Flaherty often overhear customers say, “I love this store” and “Everything you make tastes so good.” They feel genuinely humbled by the compliments. Kirsten says, “There are so many good bakeries out there.” Kieran adds, “The fact that they return for more is a compliment in itself.”
The professionally trained chefs had a common dream to own their own business. They met while working at Opus Hotel in Vancouver where Keiran was chef de cuisine and Kirsten was pastry chef. Wishing to unite their talents for pastry and savoury, they opened The Sweet Spot in 2010.
THE SWEET SPOT - best quality ingredients, taste - ordered the Black Forest cake for my birthday - Outstanding. The lemon tarts we are so hooked on. Quiche any type is so delicate and yummy. Home made mint choco ice cream - delicious.
The Sweet Spot is a tiny pastry shop with panache. People travel from far and wide to select from the display cases filled with baked delicacies: mousses, éclairs, cakes, tarts, Viennoiserie, scones, quiche, daily sandwiches and more. Two devoted chefs with impressive credentials work out of the small kitchen (you can view them hard at work from the side window).
