Whyte Avenue in Edmonton has always been a special place for the Jaffer family. They’ve lived and ran food businesses in the area for decades, so when a small bakery came on the market in 2002, Saiyed Jaffer and his mother jumped at the opportunity: the area, the culture, the food industry; it’s all a part of their family history.
Saiyed and his mother saw the chance to create something different for the people of the historic Old Strathcona district of Edmonton. They rebranded the bakery, calling it the Artisan Resto-Café, and put their heads together to deliver top quality food with a laidback European atmosphere.
“My mother is a baker and chef by trade so together we came up with the concept, and have run with it since then,” says Saiyed. “At the Artisan Resto-Café we still do a bit of baking, but it’s not as big a part of what we do anymore. We’ve evolved into a breakfast, lunch and brunch destination. My mom is retired now, but still helps out every now and again.”
Think your friends might be familiar with this business? Ask your friends on Facebook to see what they think.
If you’ve been working out in the morning by Whyte Avenue (or you’re eating your first breakfast before meeting your friends for brunch – no judgment here), take a few steps down into Artisan and grab a light, delicious wrap. Going bigger? They’ll happily make you an egg-white omelet for an extra buck. If you like standard meals done well, you won’t be disappointed.

The menu features items made with freshly baked artisanal breads and local farm-fresh eggs. They offer a fairly traditional brunch/breakfast menu, which includes a variety of classic egg dishes, a number of different eggs Benedict, omelettes, waffles, buttermilk pancakes and French toast. You can also opt for a breakfast croissant, wrap or pecan cinnamon bun. Gluten-free bread is available for an extra charge.
