Swandri, the owner of Calgary’s The Rock Cafe and Restaurant, is a firm believer in being a dreamer, and for very good reason. Emigrating to Canada when he was 19 years old, the restauranteur arrived with only $350 in his pocket and no place to stay. “When I came to Canada, I got a job working in a kitchen,” Swandri explains. “It was a great job, but I knew that I wasn’t going to cook for other people all of my life.” Swandri's dream was to open his own restaurant one day.
Ten years later, Swandri and his wife made the dream a reality, purchasing an existing business and turning it into Swandri's very own fusion restaurant. “I remember going in at 30 years old and getting my business license,” Swandri recalls with a laugh. “The person behind the counter couldn’t believe how young I was.”
Once he launched The Rock, success came quickly, and the customer response was overwhelming. “I love the freedom of owning my own restaurant. I can decide to try something new anytime I want,” Swandri says with a smile.
