An expert guide to massage therapy products

December 10, 2014

A successful homemade massage requires a certain amount of technique on the part of the self-styled therapist, but there are also all those little extras that make the experience so enjoyable: relaxing scents, silky textures, hypnotizing music and a soothing atmosphere. Your curiosity is piqued? Then here’s what you need to know about the products used by massage therapists.

An expert guide to massage therapy products

Which are the main products used by massage therapists?

Most professionals get their products from retailers and wholesalers specializing in the field. Essential oils, creams, balms and seed or nut oils are among the most used massage products. They are never chosen or used at random. Therapists select textures, scents and friction qualities to suit the type of massage they are giving and their clients’ preferences. Some products are specifically designed to moisturize, tone, soothe, relax, heal or stimulate the skin and muscles.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy, or the use of essential oils to promote healing and relaxation, is intimately related to massage therapy. Essential oils are extracted from flowers, leaves, fruits, bark, seeds and roots. In most cases, a few drops of essential oil are added to massage oil so that their therapeutic qualities can penetrate the skin and spread throughout the body. Some scents are especially sought-after in massage therapy because of their benefits.

  • To reduce stress: lavender, mandarin and verbena.
  • For pain relief: marjoram and rosemary.
  • As an antiviral: eucalyptus and melaleuca.
  • Relief for heavy legs syndrome: lemon and cypress.

Other essential oils may be used during massage therapy, including orange, geranium, peppermint, patchouli and sandalwood. If there are any scents that you especially dislike, it’s important to mention this to the massage therapist at the start of the session.

A range of accessories

The main tools you’ll need for a home massage are, naturally, your hands. However, you may like to experiment with some of the optional products used by massage therapists, such as slightly warmed stones or heated towels. And don’t forget the ambient music and a gentle light source. If you have a fold-up massage table, you’ll really be set, but even if you don’t, just have your “client” relax on the bed or on some couch cushions on the floor. What really counts is a soothing atmosphere and your best intentions.
