The ingredients for a homemade substitute for bubble-blowing liquid are right at your kitchen sink — dishwashing liquid and water. Pour once ounce of dishwashing liquid into a clean two-cup measure and fill with tap water (one part dishwashing liquid to 15 parts water), then mix gently. This bubble solution performs best when left to sit overnight before use. Hard water will yield poor results, so test your tap water by making a small batch of solution. If you can't get bubbles, switch to distilled water.
Why buy that colourful sculpting dough when you and junior can make your own from regular pantry staples? Here's how: mix 250 millilitres (one cup) of salt together with 250 millilitres (one cup) of flour. Using your fist, make a deep indent in the mixture, and pour in a little water. To add colour, simply use some non-toxic watercolour paint or food colouring. Knead well and shape into a ball. Roll out, and hand the little one some blunt-edged cookie cutters to cut out shapes, mould into sculptures, or make into holiday ornaments. Store in an airtight container, for tomorrow is another day!
That nasty, gunky green favourite of kids everywhere is only a kitchen cabinet away. To make it, combine one teaspoon of psyllium husks (available at pharmacies everywhere) with 250 millilitres (one cup) of water in a lidded jar, and shake vigorously for three minutes. Pour into a microwavable container and add a few drops of hideous green food colouring. Microwave on high for three minutes; stop the process if the slime starts to ooze out the top of the container. Let it rest for three minutes, and microwave for another five minutes. Remove carefully, and let cool for an hour. Store in an airtight container.
