When it comes to regional cuisine, imitations just won’t do. Nobody makes pasta like the Italians, nobody makes a croissant like the French and nobody makes goulash like somebody cooking from a handed-down family recipe courtesy of a Hungarian grandmother. “The Bread and Butter menu includes authentic central and eastern European dishes which are made from family recipes,” says co-owner Lazar Bunda proudly.
Lazar may well be proud of the restaurant he runs with his mother Mira and his sister Severa, and not just for the delicious and hearty food. Bread and Butter opened in 1980 and the Bunda family took it over in 1995, but not without a struggle. Mira came to Canada from the former Yugoslavia in the late 1980s as a single mother and barely spoke English. Determination to create a better life for herself and her family led her to master the language and buy the popular neighbourhood restaurant. Today, she’s got to be one of the busiest and happiest cooks in Toronto, producing her tasty dishes with the help of her children, Lazar and Severa.

This is a really cozy place with caring, friendly people and very good food.
Food is good but seating is terrible. And most tables are reserved incase a larger group comes in. Been here a half dozen times unfortunately today is my last.
what a great experience! We ate like kings and even had vine with our meals for less than $40 tips included. The best part was that it was all so tasty. The hot schnitzel served over top of crispy salad was such a delight. To finish it off we had this great chocolate raspberry cake, melt in your mouth! Highly recommend this charming little place, VB
ehhh :S it's ok but i don't really know what all the hype is about. I had their famous schnitzel but all i got was a microwaved piece of deep fried meat on bread. I wish i could say more but i didn't really like it that much then again that was my first schnitzel :P.
The restaurant is adorable and friendly. We had schnitzel that was seasoned perfectly, thin breading that made it crispy and authentic. The pieces were large. Mashed potatoes melted in your mouth and the peas were seasoned with a secret spice which made them delicious. The paprikash was very home-made. It was very tasty and you felt like you were in your mother's kitchen. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and definitely come again! Jan & Steve, Lennie & Susan
I saw the signs for the Schnitzel Fest on Mount Pleasant and had to see what all the hype was about. Such an amazing sandwich I had to get two. Oh, and those little tarts next to the cash register, WOW!! Check this place out.
I have been eating at Bread & Butter for as long as I can remember. Hands down best place to eat with the friendliest sevice and an amazing patio. Go now and make great memories while eatin the best home made european food in Toronto.
What a wonderful secret. My wife and I play Tennis in Davisville and exercise at GoodLife on Mt. Pleasant. This is the best place to dine after a tough workout. What a wonderful experience, we will regular this great place and tell all our friends.
I am so happy to have found my home away from home. After leaving Germany 4 years ago, I never would have thought I would have found Schnitzel this good. Simply Wunderbar. Thank you Bread and Butter, you are my new favourite restaurant in Toronto. Danke schön!
WOW!!! What an unbelievable experience. The food was great and the service was so sweet. I was walking along Mt. Pleasant and stumbled upon this diamond called BREAD & BUTTER. This has to be my new favourite place to eat in Davisville. I am so happy to have found a restaurant with Euro flavour in Toronto.
This is the best kept secret in Toronto. If you haven't visited the Bread and Butter by now, find your way to Mt. Pleasant & Millwood. I thought it was the best breakfast and lunch place I've visited in the whole city. Unbelievable service and food that many of your grew up eating. Remember what Mom used to make when you were growning up, this is the same thing. Great home cooked food with that Eastern Euro flavour.
The European style cuisine is of an excellent quality and authenticity. The service impeccable. Very pleasant neighbourhood place to go out any time of the day or to order take out. Reasonable prices.
Best Schnitzel sandwiches in town. Friendly staff, quaint setting, great little patio. Fantastic eastern European food or a simple sandwich...highly recommended!!
