If you know Kensington Market, then you know Amadeu's Restaurant is a fixture on Augusta Avenue. That’s because the Portuguese family style restaurant has been going strong since 1989, when Rui Goncalves’ parents first opened its doors to the neighbourhood.
“My parents had worked in the restaurant industry back home and when they immigrated, they took all sorts of jobs,” he recalls. His dad, whose name was Amadeu, did catering for weddings on weekends and really wanted a place of his own. First he opened a restaurant up the street with his brother, but eventually he switched locations when friends of his who owned the space were ready to retire.
The new location was renovated to feature a more casual neighbourhood bar on one side and a family-friendly fine dining space on the other, making it a welcoming spot for a variety of hungry customers.

Best spot in the market. If you're priority is the best spot for a drink and an appetizer in the market then this is the spot. The patio is hopping from 11 A.M. Lots of locals and regulars keep this place lively. There is a more traditional restaurant immediately next door if you want a proper meal - yes, you can order that here too but this is more of a drink and apps kind of spot. If its a sunny day and you're out strolling the market make sure you pick this as the place to end up at to talk about your day and have the best view of the heavy pedestrian traffic and the jugglers with flaming hoola hoops and bowling pins in the eclectically populated park immediately next door. This isn't just the best place to go in the market it IS the market. See you there!
The taster dish was pretty bad, it had some mussels chicken wings and something else I forget. Not good at all! I was there during the summer, nice patio and people (a lot of locals). A nice place to go for drinks on the patio.
Been there quite a few times already. Love the place. Love the people. Love the Aguardente ps: Hey, EB I think you submitted your review to the wrong restaurant. This is a portuguese restaurant. None of those items are on the menu.
We were treating with a warm welcome right from the start....the environment was really nicely designed as they changed the decor & appearance of the dinning room. Our food didnt take long at all and as for the tenderness of the steak, melted in my mouth.. it was so delicious and well seasoned & full of taste! Would definately go there again....
The food was amazing and also they played live music, which was nice but a little too loud. Overall a great place to dine.
It was quite disappointing. The soup was warm to cold. The schnitzel was quite bland (almost flavourless) and not thin enough as it should be. The Zurcher was okay but nothing more. We asked one waiter for some water after our dinner and he never came back with it. Another waiter who took our dessert order did not know much information about the desserts. Overall not worth the high price we paid for it.
