Leon Martin's interest in bonsai began in 1965 as a graduate student at the University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa. The exchange program was in cooperation with Michigan State University. This resulted in exchange programs with Canada and Kansai Gaidia University in Osaka. His bonsai mentor was Hiroshi Yamaji a Kansai graduate. This friendship fostered many trips to Japan.
