Absolutely disgusting. Ordered two very simple things - chicken burger and hot hamburger platter. Used Skip the Dishes to deliver (none of this is on them). My wife's comment on the chicken sandwich is that "you could kill someone with this". Yep, chicken burger ninja throwing star - take someone's head right off with it. Cold, rock hard with a dribble of hot sauce. The hamburger platter - even worse. Dried out, cold and just outright gross. Gravy is so dark it literally looks like congealed

First Poutine Ever

Went to this restaurant after watching "You Gotta Eat Here", was our first Poutine ever and it was quite delicious. I ate a fabulous sandwich and my sister said her sandwich was the best vegetarian sandwich she ever had. Desserts looked really appealing but were not as amazing as we expected. I think is a little overpriced, the first night we went, four entrees - four drinks was almost $90. Second time around one entree, four desserts and water $63.

Nice but for a price

I try and stop in here for any of their items, but have to say, it's pricy food probably because they own the market after 11 pm. Hamburgs are good, and shakes are faboulous. Like a previous writer, you can get a good feed for less...but you pay for the look-in diner experience.

Ottawa's best diner by a mile

I couldn't survive without the ESD. Great food, amazing staff Weekends expect a line up, but it is worth the wait. I am a poutine addict, you can actually hear my arteries hardening but I wouldnt have it any other way. Poutine and smoked meat is crazy as well as the hangover special (eggs and poutine) I have been going there for probably 15 years and have never had a bad experience

Decent meal

I visited the Elgin Street Diner with a friend who swore they had one of the best poutines in Ottawa. So of course with this in mind, the bar was set pretty high in my mind. We sat down and were given the menus pretty quickly. It was a bit busy in there, and it seemed despite a decent amount of staff there, one guy in particular was pulling all the weight. Regardless, the meal came very quickly. I ordered a standard poutine and a strawberry milkshake. I'll admit, the portion size was huge. It was literally a poutine mountain on a pretty large plate. The milkshake was also huge, big enough that I ended up sharing it with my friend. I found the poutine was, well so-so. While they didn't skimp at all on gravy or cheese curds, the fries were just regular shoe-string. Nothing special at all. The gravy was very very salty, so if you plan on ordering it, ask for a glass of water along with your meal (seriously). The milkshake on the other hand was surprisingly good. It wasn't too strawberry-ish that it would turn your stomach halfway through, but just right. In the end, I guess it was a decent meal. Nothing special, probably would have been amazing had I been going in to it after a night of drinking like I've heard a lot of people do.

My favorite restaurant of all times. I have been going to the diner for more than 10 years now. The food is great, they must be doing something right as they have the same staff for all these years. #1 for me is the lox club, 2nd choice is the veggie burger. The orange creamsicle shake is to die for! I would love to have the stomach for poutine but that is for the younger crowd who seem to eat it morning and night

This place is one of the best I've been to for Poutine. They have a good selection. I've tried like 3 or 4 of their poutines and each one was great! Top it off with the Dreamsicle milkshake, and you've got dinner! Of course, it's not the healthiest meal, but you don't eat poutine to get ready for swimsuit season, that's for sure! I'd definitely recommend it to anyone!

Great restaurant, we were recommended to eat here by our hotel concierge. The staff were so on top of things, there is no service like this in the US. Montreal smoked meat was great, the soups tasted home made. We splurged and had dessert as well. Everything was 100%. We will certainly be back.

Food was nothing special. Any competent cook can manage breakfast and this was typical diner. Was put off though by the general mess of the place. Floor was extremely dirty. Service matched the food. Ho hum.

As a place to go after a night out carousing on Elgin Street, Elgin Street Diner never closes. I’ve seen poutine consumed there at all hours, including a gruesome pile of fries smothered in the darkest gravy imaginable for breakfast! Very loyal staff and customers make this spot an Ottawa classic.
