I’m a jerk.
At least that’s what I’d be if I went with the age old adage, “You are what you eat.” That’s because I just had the pleasure of dining on some of the most fantastic jerk I’ve ever taken a whiff of. It came from Someplace Else. I know, it sounds like a bad joke.
It is a real place though, just a short walk from campus down Dalhousie Street (across from the Expositor building.) It is home to some of Brantford’s finest Caribbean cuisine.
I decided on testing out the talents of the kitchen staff after reading their take out menu that boasted the best chicken in Brantford.
When I walked in the door there was little in the way of a warm welcome. There was no one around! I waited five minutes until I heard movement in the back. I went to the kitchen area to search for some help
“Can I get an order of jerk chicken please,” I said.
“Ya Mon,” said the perfectly accented Jamaican peeling potatoes. (Of course he said “Ya Mon,” I wouldn’t make that up. )
So my wait began. I sat at the bar and watched Judge Judy.
Judy and I spent seven minute together before my jerk was ready. I handed my ten dollar bill in exchange for the bagged Styrofoam box filled with an utterly enticing aroma. The box was coming with me. It’s called take out.
I bid the Jamaicans farewell and stepped out into the unseasonably warm October sun. I cantered down the street. Alright, it was more of a trot. I was hungry okay.
I found a table at work (I was early) and sat down to enjoy the jerk. I’d prepared myself with water since by definition jerk is muy caliente (that was the definition in my handy Spanish dictionary at least.) As I popped open the polystyrene package, a steamy cloud of jerk aroma wafted to my nostrils, where I took them in. My brain registered, “Yum.”
First of all, the colour was phenomenal. Rice with beans, a Jamaican-style coleslaw and a fabulously laid out hunk of perfectly seasoned and browned jerk chicken served up a meal for my eyes. I dug in.
My digging couldn’t come fast enough. “Where have you been all my life?” I asked the spicy chicken dish. It didn’t answer, so I ate it. Tender and moist is what comes to mind. More like perfectly tender and absolutely the juiciest chicken I’ve ever had (sorry Mom.) The spiciness ran circles around my tongue, enticing me to take a drink of high quality H20. It wasn’t too spicy though, and the rice and beans and coleslaw served as a perfect balance to the intense flavours of the chicken. I don’t even like coleslaw, but this was different.
I endeavoured to eat the entire serving, but it was too much. This is definitely a worthwhile meal for a student trying to make ends meet. Someplace Else offers a fantastic outlet for those inclined to trying and appreciating other nation’s foods. It’s an inexpensive meal packed full of flavor that will make your buds in the tongue department wake up from their grilled-cheese-induced slumber.
This is definitely a must have dish at Someplace Else.
I loved atmosphere and waitress and cook were friendly. Food was not great most probably because it was late evening and kitchen was almost done for the day. After living in the Caribe for some years I found food too simple -tasteless and servings are "kid's meal" sized.
I have to agree with suggar about this restaurant, the quality of the food has attenuate, last year i ate there, the food was very good and bursting with flavor , i don't know what could have gone so horribly wrong, as with suggar i found the food extremely greasy and tasteless very bland. I remember boasting to my friends and coworkers about how good the food at this restaurant were. I know we are in a recession , i notice that the size of the serving is gone down and the price has skyrocketed. WHAT IS WRONG HERE?
Anyway no need to answer that question, you wont be seeing me there again.
i came here and the food was great but took a long time the guy broke a glass all over me and never offered me anything thing but sorry i mean this guy drew my blood i had little bits of glass all over me even my face my friend tried to order fried dumpling and the guy said we would have to phone in ahead of time even though we waited an hour for food that was my second time there. the first time we waited about a half hour before anyone even noticed us there and again waited another hour or more for food. though the food is great the customer service is terrible terrible terrible, and the place was full of dust and was not a carribean atmosphere at all, the sad part is i will probably go there again for there food and call ahead of time and take it home to enjoy

I bought an Oxtail dinner on Friday afternoon and it was very tasty, the flavours explode in my mouth, it was so good i decide to go back and get another one on saturday, to my disappointment the one on saturday had a lot of cook potatoes and the meat was over cooked. I bought this meal all the time and this was the first one i have seen with potatoes in it. Serving meat combined with potatoes over rice is too much carbohydrate for my taste and my health. The world is trying to limit carbohydrate intake, i dont see why i should put my health at risk. So no thanks, you wont be seeing me in this restaurant again. Too bad the first one was very good.

I have to agree with "Suggar" that the quality of this restaurant is gone to the dogs. I found the food highly overpriced, the food doesn't taste as good as it used to, it has no flavor, greasy and very bland in taste. The atmosphere in the restaurant in not inviting at all.

ive been going to someplace else every wednesday and thursday (and sometimes saturday) for a free poker league. of the 3 bars that the league rotates between through the week someplace else is the best, best atmosphere, best food, best service. its an amazing restaurant and i recommend it to all.
Myself and my husband Garry were absolutely pleased with our visit to someplace else! The service was just outstanding. The owner even came to our table and greeted us personally. I was very happy that he took the time to make sure we were happy with the food and service. The food was exceptional! Very tastey. I definately will visit again and I this time I will bring along some friends so their taste buds can be tickled as ours were!!!!! See you soon someplace else!
We eat Jamaican food quite regularly and have had it from many places--including Jamaica. Someplace Else consistently serves up amazingly delicious dishes that are not only authentic in flavour, but have loads of character of their own.
The serving sizes are generous and every dish we've tried has been seasoned perfectly...fried chicken, jerk chicken, stewed chicken, goat, or oxtail! In fact I'm getting hungry just writing this.
My main complaint with many caribbean restaurants is dry rice 'n' peas. At Someplace Else this has not ONCE been an issue--and we've been eating there for the last few years.
We've chatted with the owner too... an affable, friendly sort. If you don't spend much time around Jamaicans you'll likely not understand two words he says, but that's okay... it's a friendly, relaxed atmosphere there and WELL worth a visit if you haven't yet.
This is it...The best Jamaican meal in Brantford. Thanks to you all for a such great food. The chicken was juicy, well cooked...I am still licking my fingers...it was the best bar-b-que chicken I've ever had...thanks all.
I also had the best ice-cream there..., my daughter who didn't want food...settled for a beef patty and slushie..she says mom, "best patty & slushie." I believe her because she is very hard to pleased with food.
Be sure to stop at Someplace Else on Dalhousie street before KFC, opposite from the EXpositor next time you are in Brantford.

Someone recomends this restaurant, i went in and decide to try the curried goat roti, it was very delicious so much so that i licked the plate, i had roti before from another restaurant but there was too much curry added this one was just right, there was enough curry for you to taste the potatoes, very tasty and excellent customer service from the staff. I will visit again.
I found out about this restaurant on this site and thought that people were exaggerating when i read their review. When i took my first bite of the festival i knew what all these people wrote on here were the truth, the food was excellent it just melts in my mouth, all the herbs and spices just bursts out in natural flavours. Phenomenal customer service from the staff there. I will most definately be visiting again.

This is the only restaurant that makes me feels like my mom's own kitchen...the atmostphere is warm...the food is absolutely delicious...excellent cooking...Best Jamaican cooking ever! I will recommend this place to anyone who is looking to enjoy a GREAT caribbean meal. WAY TO GO SOMEPLACE ELSE!

Great Place with good Hours, We ordered delivery and it was fast, 10 pieces of Chicken and I only got one cause my roommate gobbeled down 8 pieces as soon as it arrived. Best Chicken around for sure. Oh and The Oxtail was great too but how could you mess up Oxtail.

My Husband and i were heading home when he decide to stop by and get a Curried goat dinner at this restaurant, i wasnt feeling well but i still went inside with my husband, while ordering his food i started sneezing, the cook looked and me and said you should get a bowl of my chicken soup, reluctantly i decide to try a bowl, the soup was so good that i went back for six bowls, needless to say my husband buys his curried goat at this restaurant at least twice per week now. Excellent food and friendly staff. "good food and good people"

Finally, a restaurant in Brantford with truly authentic Caribbean food, i was very skeptical about going there cause i was snob in the other caribbean restaurant by the owner, but was i in for the shock of my life when i walked into this restaurant, the staff was very friendly and professional and the food was excellent, you will definately be seeing a lot more of me.
This meal was one of the best i have had in my life, just writing about this meal makes me feel famish, i enjoyed every bit of it, if there wasnt so many people in the restaurant i would have licked my plate, it was so good "yummy". Great staff i feel like i was home having my lunch.

we went to Jamaica on vaccation and came back craving the food we had in Jamaica someone recomends this restaurant i drove 230 kilometres from Peterborough, to get this food and i can say it was worth every kilometers that we drove, The staff was amazing. compliments to the chef. We will definately be making this trip four or five times a month again.
