As the co-owner of Bonnie’s Bread, Magdalena Czerwinska makes sure that everything coming out of the bakery’s ovens is up to scratch, that everything on the shelves is fresh, and that nothing ever goes to waste.
“When I was a child, I once threw out some bread. This greatly upset my mother, who grew up in the shadow of the Second World War in Poland, and had experienced real hardship,” explains Magdalena. “She told me to go feed the birds and never throw bread in the garbage, because when she was a child she sometimes didn’t have bread for weeks.” Beyond not wasting food, her mother wanted her to help the hungry – both people and animals.
Magdalena learned her lesson and has married it with the focus on freshness that defines Bonnie’s Bread today. “Any baked goods that can’t be sold the next day are given to Lighthouse Church on Victoria Drive and are donated to the needy,” she explains.
