The firm of Birmingham & Wood, Architects and Planners was established in Vancouver in the 1930s. The original partners, William Birmingham and Woodruff Wood, were key in the development of West Coast Modernist architecture. Their body of work was comprised largely of institutional and residential buildings uniquely suited to the materials and landscapes of the West Coast. The firm's work has been included in three definitive shows of regional architecture: the 'Poetics of West Coast Modernism' , 2005; 'The New Spirit' at the Vancouver Art Gallery, 1997 and 'A Measure of Consensus'at the UBC Fine Arts Gallery, 1986. The current partners, Sandra Moore, MAIBC and James Burton, MAIBC are committed to continuing the legacy of Birmingham & Wood. Institutional and residential projects comprise the greatest part of the firm's current work.more...See more text
