The little town of Ladysmith on Vancouver Island, British Columbia is built on a coal mining history. The Ladysmith Inn opened in 1911. Fabricated from beams salvaged from earlier mining dormitories and provided hotel accommodations for expatriate Boer War veterans, who came to Canada to work in the Dunsmuir mines.
